Hopi ear

What is Hopi Ear (Thermo-Auricular Therapy)?

There is evidence that many ancient civilisations used ear candle treatments. It was mainly through the Hopi Indians of North Arizona that the treatment became more widely known. Hopi means “people of peace”.

A treatment may not be advised if:

  • Grommets are in place
  • Recent perforation of the ear drum has occurred
  • There is a known allergic reaction to any of the candles’ ingredients
  • Oil has been placed in the ear in the last 24 hours
  • There is inflammation or an ear infection

What happens during a treatment?

The first appointment includes a full consultation where the treatment will be fully explained. I will ask you to lie on the couch with your head comfortably to one side and supported by a pillow.

I will place the lighted candle carefully in your external ear canal. I will then place my hands gently around the base of the candle, protecting your head. Whilst it is burning down you will be aware of a gentle warmth and experience a pleasant crackling sound.

The warm air softens any debris and excess wax in the ear and this is drawn into the base of the candle by the chimney effect created. The movement of the flame creates a vibration of air that generates a massage-like effect on the eardrum.

Once the candle has burnt down to a marked level it is removed and extinguished. I then massage around the ear. The process is repeated on the other ear. Each candle takes between 10 and 12 minutes to burn.

After completing both ears you will receive a gentle, head massage that will enhance the effects of the candles. The whole candling experience is so wonderfully relaxing and soothing that many people drift off to sleep.

Optional relaxation music is available to enhance the peaceful treatment. At the end of the treatment I will offer you a glass of water whilst you sit and relax further.

Are the candles safe?

I use BIOSUN ear candles, which are regularly tested by independent institutes. They are medical products class IIa according to medical device directive 93/42/EEC. There’s more information on the MHRA directive here.

What are the candles made of?

Hopi Ear candles are quite different from conventional wax candles. Each candle is constructed of organically-grown flax, honey extracts, beeswax, beta-carotene and herbs including Camomile, Sage and Hypericum (St. John’s Wort).

Whilst Hopi Ear Candling works very well alongside conventional medicine, it should never be used in place of seeking professional medical advice. If you are concerned about your health, please always consult your GP first.
